About the Film

“Getting buzzed and dazed in foreign land of Korea, but it’s okay. Because we have Busan!”

Busanfornia is a feature film blending fiction and documentary elements. Set in Busan, South Korea, the story follows three foreign friends searching for love, work, opportunity, and a future—while confronting the emotional realities of living and belonging in a foreign country.

Synopsis

Mike dreams of becoming an actor; Mark wants to be a photographer; and Dylan wants to change the future. The three friends gather in Busan to pursue their individual ambitions. When Korean holidays arrive, their Korean friends become busy, leaving the trio with nothing to do—so they set off on a spontaneous road trip.

It’s always fun when they’re together, but in the unfamiliar city of Busan—where they came seeking new opportunities—love, work, and dreams gradually become more difficult. As their friends leave one by one, can the dreams they’ve been searching for still be found in Busan?

Audience Review

The opening scenes, where three foreigners share their backgrounds and explain why they came to Korea in search of a better life, are immediately captivating. Their camping trips reveal a growing sense of friendship and closeness between them.

However, this bond is suddenly broken when two of the friends are forced to leave Korea after their careers end prematurely—one of them having been dismissed from his teaching job.

Left behind in Busan, the remaining foreigner finds himself isolated, struggling to navigate life alone in an unfamiliar city and uncertain future.

Will he be able to carry on in Busan?

Director Statement

In Korean society—with its long-standing passion for education—the influx of foreign instructors surged during the English education boom of the 1990s and early 2000s. In contrast, this film reflects on an education market that has steadily contracted in recent years.

Native English-speaking instructors are no longer treated as outsiders; they now live as full members of Korean society. However, government policies addressing low birth rates and the private education sector—policies that once seemed distant—are now directly affecting these instructors, and this film explores the hardships they face as a result.

I intentionally maintained a light and upbeat tone, as the subject felt too casual to be framed as a serious discourse. Recognising that individual suffering often emerges from structural contradictions in society, and that policy is closely connected to economic forces, I created this work with the message of “harmonious co-prosperity”. Through the perspective of native English instructors as a specific group of foreign workers, I hope Korean society can evolve into a more harmonious one.
